This was designed when Youssef Rizkallah headed the company so would have been made between the years of 1969 and 1975. The years that Youssef headed the line are among some of my favorites and in particular his pieces that utilize quilting and patchwork are truly iconic. Rizkallah was born in Egypt and studied at the Ecole de dessin appliqué and the Ecole des arts decoratifs in Paris. His designs seem to combine that sense of couture lines that he gained in Paris with the color and vividness of his homeland. The coat falls to the floor in a fabulous expanse of light white silk and wool mix. The collar and front, as well as those spectacular sleeves and intricate hem, are all edged with a soft yellow velvet mixed with a floral print cotton. Elaborate designs adorn each sleeve and all around the hem and these are huge and dramatic. They suggest a vivid sunset and I love the use of a gold colored faux leather that gives them a touch of glitz. The sleeves are split deliberately to the elbow to the huge, wide cuffs fall down and put when you move so that you can see that design perfectly. It is dramatic, and wonderful and rare. Excellent condition
Fully lined in a hand set white silk and closes down the front with hook & eye. Perhaps the teeniest of grubbiness along the edge of the hem but appears otherwise to have never been worn.
